The 10th July sees the first young people led planning event for the STAR Awards later this year. These are the Oscars for children in care, a night of recognition and celebration for all children in care for what they achieve.
Shine week also heralds the launch of the Isle of Wight Award celebrating the achievements of young people. This will culminate in our annual celebration of achievements at the Isle of Wight Big Day Out on 11th October 2009 where over 7,000 children, young people and their families have a free fun day out whilst finding out about over 200 services, things to do and places to go.
Shine week hosts one of the Real Opportunities Now programmes which is a week of positive activities for young people not in employment, education or training that boasts their confidence and gives them skills so that 71% go straight into education, employment of training following the RON programme.
On the 10th and 11th July the young people's Shine planning group are undertaking a 'things to do and places to go real time audit’ of what is available for young people to do, what it costs and how accessible it is. Groups of young people will be out and about testing out venues, activities and asking other young people what they do and what they would like to do on a Friday and Saturday night if there were more on offer.
Our youth centres are opening up both evenings and providing taster sessions of different things to do and places to go that range from a 'Mocktail' bar, film making, music workshops, circus skills and carnival workshop sessions.
Following Shine week, the 15th July has the Dragon Festival organised by and for young people with disabilities and learning difficulties supported by the Youth Opportunities Fund. The Children in Care Council young people host one of their Have Your Say Days where they and Council workers and elected members undertake a series of positive activities together, this time trying out different activities on the water such as kayaking, sailing and surfing. Their joint planning beforehand and after informs how services are planned and delivered to improve outcomes for children in care.

The event will involve competitions for young people with the medals being funded by the police. There will also be stalls at the event and alternative activities including face painting.
