Time Line of a Young Person
The following is a guide to what young people can do at what age. For further
information please follow the link to the ‘Is it Legal’ guide
At 12 Years Old:

12A category films can be watched at the cinema without being accompanied
by an adult. - 12 category films can be rented or bought.
- At 12 children can buy a pet.
- A newly obtained passport must be signed by the child once they are 12 and
not by a parent.
- Children can be trained to participate in dangerous performances subject to
the grant of a local authority licence.
- Can be sent to a secure training centre if they are persistent offenders
At 13 Years Old:
- Children can take part time work on a restricted basis if local by-laws allow
it (see iwight.com for further details)
At 14 Years Old:
- Children can be employed on a part time basis, but there are restrictions
in place over the type of work and the number of hours worked.
- Final SATS tests are sat.
- Can be sent to prison
At 15 Years Old:
- 15 category films can be watched at the cinema without being accompanied by
an adult.
- 15 category films can be rented or bought.
At 16 Years Old:
- Young people are entitled to a minimum wage (development rate) of £3.40
per hour
- Young people can consent to medical treatment
- Young people can legally leave school (In England and Wales: a person is no
longer of compulsory school age after the last Friday of June of the school
year in which their 16th birthday occurs.)
- Young people can have for a full ten year passport (before then children have
a five year passport)
- Can obtain a licence for a moped
- Can join the armed forces with parental consent
- Can apply for a bank cheque book
- Can consent to a heterosexual or homosexual relationship

Can obtain contraceptive advice and treatment without parent’s consent - Can marry with parent’s consent
- Can have an alcoholic drink with a meal if accompanied by an adult
- Can buy premium bonds
- Can but National Lottery tickets and scratch cards
- Liable for paying National Insurance contributions (type of tax)
- Can apply for Job Seekers Allowance (unemployment Benefit)
At 17 Years Old:

Young people can apply for a provisional driving licence for a car - Young people are entitled to a minimum wage of £ per hour
- Can obtain a licence for a motorbike
- Can own and buy an airgun and ammunition
At 18 Years Old:
- Can purchase alcohol, cigarettes and fireworks
- Can apply for a mortgage
- Can apply for a credit card
- Can apply for a bank overdraft
- Can buy a house in their name
- Classed as an adult, including in the eyes of the law
- Are entitled to a minimum wage (development rate for 18-21 year olds) of
£4.60 per hour
- Can buy goods on the internet using a credit card
- 18 category films can be watched at the cinema without being accompanied
by an adult.
- 18 category films can be rented or bought.
- Can vote
- Can marry without parent’s consent
- Can join the armed forces without parental consent
- Can have a tattoo
- Can go into a betting shop and participate in a bingo game
